Escalating Density Training Blocks
A density method where, in 8-minute blocks, students alternate two opposing exercises doing as many low-rep sets as they can. The goal is to complete more total reps in the same time in later sessions.
How to play
- Explain the method: each block alternates two exercises (A and B) in short sets, with as much rest as each student needs, and all reps are added up (2 min).
- Block 1 (8 min): A = Bulgarian split squat or lunge; B = band row. Start with sets of 5 clean reps, never going to failure.
- Rest (2 min): each student records their total reps for A and B on the card.
- Block 2 (8 min): A = push-ups at the chosen level; B = single-leg glute bridge. Same system.
- Wrap-up (4 min): record totals and set a goal for next session: 10 percent more reps in the same 8 minutes.
Rules
- Every set is done with full form; sloppy reps do not count.
- Sets start low and get shorter as fatigue builds; never go to failure.
- Check bands before use and anchor them under the feet or to the wall bars.
Variations
Easier
5-minute blocks with beginner-level exercises.
Standard
Two 8-minute blocks with two exercises each.
Harder
Three 8-minute blocks and a heavier band for exercise B.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: pairs of seated upper-body exercises (band press and row).
- Shy students: totals are private and compared only with their own previous score.
- Advanced students: sets of 6 reps with a slow lowering tempo.
Learning goals
- Understand and apply the density training method.
- Manage rest independently within a fixed time.
- Set a measurable progression goal for future sessions.
Equipment for a class of 25
- yoga mats: 25
- resistance bands: 25
- stopwatch: 1
- recording cards: 25
Teacher tip
Make it clear this is not a race: the winners are the ones who keep sets clean through the whole block. Keep the cards so you can repeat the same blocks in two weeks and show improvement.
