Emotional Thermometer Check-Out
At the end of class, each student marks on a large paper thermometer how they feel and tells a partner what's behind that feeling. It builds emotional awareness, listening skills, and a positive class climate.
How to play
- Before class, the teacher tapes butcher paper to the wall with a thermometer split into five levels: drained, tense, okay, calm, and energized (setup).
- Students walk slowly around the space for 1 minute, breathing through the nose and thinking about how they feel.
- In groups of five, students take turns marking a dot with a marker on the level that fits best (1.5 min).
- In pairs, each student takes 30 seconds to share what made them feel that way and what might help the rest of the day (1.5 min).
- The teacher looks at the thermometer and comments on the group's overall mood without singling anyone out (1 min).
- Close with three slow breaths as a whole group, standing (1 min).
Rules
- Marks are anonymous; no names.
- Partners listen without interrupting or judging.
- Wait your turn at the paper, no pushing.
- What's shared in pairs stays in pairs.
Variations
Easier
Students just mark the thermometer and do the closing breath, with no partner talk.
Standard
Mark the thermometer and have a short partner talk.
Harder
Mark at the start and end of class in different colors, and the group discusses what changed and why.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: hang the paper at an accessible height or pass it around on a clipboard.
- Autism: each level includes a drawn face to make identifying emotions easier.
- Shyness: the student can write a response on a small slip instead of talking with a partner.
Learning goals
- Identify and name one's emotional state after activity.
- Listen respectfully to a classmate.
- Reflect on the emotional climate of the group.
Equipment for a class of 25
- butcher paper: 1
- markers: 5
Teacher tip
Save thermometers from several classes: they show how the group shifts around finals. If many dots land on drained or tense, lighten the load in upcoming classes.
