Eight-Minute Clothespin Team Run

For 8 minutes the whole class runs at their own pace around a loop, and every lap each runner clips a clothespin onto the team's rope. Students build aerobic endurance and a steady pace, and they see that every lap counts for the group.

How to play

  1. Mark a loop of about 100 m with cones and, next to the start, stretch a long rope at waist height; each team has its own section and a pile or bucket of clothespins (2 min).
  2. Make 5 teams of 5 and explain the rule: each time you pass the rope, grab one clothespin from your pile and clip it on your team's section without fully stopping (2 min).
  3. Each team sets a lap goal for 8 minutes and tests a "can still talk" pace for 1 minute (3 min).
  4. Start the stopwatch: everyone runs at once for 8 minutes; call out the halfway point at minute 4 so students can adjust their pace.
  5. When time is up, each team walks to its section, counts the clothespins and compares the total with its goal (2 min).
  6. Quick circle debrief: which team came closest to its goal, and who kept the same pace from start to finish (1 min).

Rules

Variations

Easier

Run for 5 minutes and shorten the loop to 70 meters.

Standard

Eight minutes of continuous running on a one-hundred-meter loop, one clothespin per lap.

Harder

Every even minute students run one faster lap, and that lap is worth two clothespins if they hit it.

Teacher tip

Put the rope on a wide part of the loop so there is no traffic jam while clipping. Save the totals and repeat in a few weeks so students can see their improvement.
