Eight Brocades Qigong
A simplified version of a traditional Chinese series of eight slow standing movements coordinated with breathing. It builds whole-body mobility, focus, and awareness of a movement practice from another culture.
How to play
- Students spread out in a checkerboard pattern, two arm lengths apart, and the teacher gives a one-sentence background of the practice (1 min).
- Base stance: feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, slow nasal breathing (0.5 min).
- The teacher teaches the first four moves: holding up the sky, drawing the bow, separating heaven and earth, and looking back; four reps each (3 min).
- Then the next four, kept gentle: swaying the trunk, reaching for the toes, fists with a focused gaze, and heel raises; four reps each (3 min).
- Full series nonstop, with the teacher silent and leading only by demonstration (2 min).
- Close with hands on the belly and three deep breaths (0.5 min).
Rules
- Every movement is slow and joints are never forced.
- Bend the knees when reaching toward the toes if needed.
- Inhale when opening or rising and exhale when closing or lowering.
- Respect classmates' space so arms don't collide.
Variations
Easier
Practice only the first four movements with two reps each.
Standard
All eight movements with four reps each and one full run-through.
Harder
Groups of four prepare the series and one member leads the whole class.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do all arm and trunk moves seated and skip the heel raises.
- Hearing impairment: place the student in the front row and use clear gestures to show the rhythm.
- Balance issues: practice next to a wall or fence for support during heel raises.
Learning goals
- Perform a series of slow movements coordinated with breathing.
- Learn about a traditional movement practice from another culture.
- Improve focus and mobility after exercise.
Teacher tip
Don't chase perfect form; slowness and breathing matter most. If the blacktop is noisy, stand with your back to the noise so students face you.
