Egg Carton Biathlon
Like a biathlon, students alternate a running lap with three bottle cap tosses into a numbered egg carton, and every miss means a short penalty loop. It builds endurance, accuracy with a racing heart, and self-regulation.
How to play
- Build it (3 min): each pair writes a number from 1 to 3 in every cup of a 12-cup egg carton with a marker; the four corner cups are worth 0.
- Setup: a 40-yard loop around cones, with a shooting area to one side where cartons sit on the ground 6 feet from a line. Next to it, a 10-yard penalty loop.
- Partners: one runs and tosses while the other keeps score; switch after each set of 3 laps.
- Set (4 min per student): run one lap, reach the line, and toss 3 caps underhand. For every cap that doesn't stay in, run the penalty loop once before continuing.
- Scoring: add up the cups hit across the 3 laps. Each student does two sets (16 minutes total with switches).
- Wrap-up (1 min): compare accuracy on the first and last laps and talk about how fatigue affects it.
Rules
- Toss underhand with both feet behind the line.
- Penalty loops are always completed, with no one needing to check.
- The scorer collects the caps and hands them back to the runner.
- Safety: the main loop and the penalty loop run in one direction only.
Variations
Easier
Carton 3 feet from the line and two laps per set.
Standard
Carton 6 feet away, three laps, and a penalty loop for each miss.
Harder
Toss from 10 feet or with the non-dominant hand, and only the 3-point cups count.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: completes the loop in a wheelchair, with the line moved to 3 feet.
- Hearing impairment or autism: a visual card showing the run-toss-penalty order.
- Fitness level: the penalty loop may be done at a brisk walk.
Learning goals
- Keep a steady running pace for several minutes.
- Toss accurately while controlling breathing after effort.
- Follow the rules honestly without a referee.
Equipment for a class of 25
- egg cartons: 13
- plastic bottle caps: 40
- markers: 13
- cones: 16
Teacher tip
Cardboard egg cartons absorb the bounce better than plastic ones. Before tossing, teach two slow breaths: it's the biathletes' trick and it shows in accuracy.
