Effort Clothesline: Clothespins from 0 to 10
A cool-down where each student clips a clothespin to a rope numbered 0 to 10 to show how hard the lesson felt, and then the class reads the shape of the clothesline. It builds perceived exertion and reflection on the lesson without rankings.
How to play
- While walking easy around the track, everyone picks a number from 0 to 10 for the whole lesson (2 min).
- Two students hold the rope with the number cards hung on it. One at a time, each student clips their clothespin at their number without talking (2 min).
- Look at the clothesline: where do the clothespins bunch up? Are some far apart? Look for explanations without pointing at anyone (2 min).
- Cleanup: each student removes a clothespin that isn't theirs, puts it in the box and says one thing that would make the next lesson just right (2 min).
Rules
- Clothespins are anonymous: nobody says which one is theirs.
- There's no good or bad number; a 3 and a 9 are equally valid.
- Clip in silence so you don't influence others.
Variations
Easier
A 0–5 scale with drawn faces.
Standard
A 0–10 scale with a group discussion.
Harder
Two colors of clothespins: one for leg effort and one for breathing effort.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: hold the rope at a height they can reach.
- Visual impairment: raised numbers on the cards and a partner walks with them to the rope.
- Students who don't want to take part in front of others: clip at cleanup, when nobody is watching.
Learning goals
- Rate the overall effort of the lesson.
- Read group data without singling anyone out.
- Suggest adjustments for future lessons.
Equipment for a class of 25
- long rope: 1
- clothespins: 30
- number cards: 11
Teacher tip
Take a photo of the clothesline every lesson to see how it changes across the unit. No clothespins? Hair ties or sticky notes on a wall work.
