Dynamic Traffic Light: One Color, One Moving Stretch
Students jog freely and, depending on the cone color the teacher holds up, perform a dynamic stretch while moving. It builds mobility on the move and attention.

How to play
- Introduce the four colors: red, lunge with a trunk twist; blue, straight-leg kick to the hand; yellow, knee to chest; green, heel to glutes (2 min).
- Free jog around the schoolyard, switching colors every 20–30 seconds (3 min).
- Show two colors at once: students alternate both moves (2 min).
- A student volunteer becomes the traffic light and adds a new move for one color (2 min).
- Easy jog and walk to finish (1 min).
Rules
- Stretches are done on the move, with no jerky bouncing.
- Look ahead to avoid collisions.
- Each move goes until you feel tension, never pain.
- The teacher approves any new move before it is used.
Variations
Easier
Walk instead of jog and use only two colors.
Standard
Easy jog with all four colors.
Harder
Switch every 10 seconds and combine moves.
Adaptations
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: the color system is already visual; the teacher stays in clear view.
- Students with visual impairments: each color also has a key word called out loud.
- Wheelchair users: an upper-body version for each color (trunk twist, arm cross, shoulder circles, arms overhead).
Learning goals
- Learn dynamic stretches that fit a warm-up.
- React to visual cues while controlling the movement.
- Understand that dynamic stretching prepares the body better than long static holds.
Equipment for a class of 25
- colored cones: 4
Teacher tip
Use large cones or pinnies tied on so they can be seen from far away. The classic mistake is turning the straight-leg kick into a wild swing: ask for a straight but controlled lift.
