Diamond Follow-the-Leader Dance
Groups of four stand in a diamond, all facing the same wall: whoever is in front improvises dance moves and the others copy; when the group turns, the leader changes. It gets the whole body moving while building imitation skills, creativity, and confidence.
How to play
- Make groups of four. Each group stands in a diamond about 5 feet apart, all facing the same wall: one in front, two on the sides, one in back.
- With music at about 120 BPM, the front person improvises simple, big movements for four 8-counts (about 30 seconds) while the other three copy.
- At the end of the fourth 8-count, the leader makes a quarter turn to the right and the whole group turns too: a new person is now in front and becomes the leader.
- Round 1 (3 min): mobility moves and small in-place steps only (swings, circles, side steps).
- Round 2 (3 min): bigger moves and light hops; every leader must include at least one arm move and one leg move.
Rules
- Moves must be easy to copy on the first try; no stunts.
- No one laughs at anyone's move: copy everything with the same energy.
- Safety: keep the diamond spacing so nobody collides on the turns.
Variations
Easier
The teacher hands out a card with six basic steps and leaders only choose the order.
Standard
Each leader improvises for four 8-counts and the group turns right.
Harder
The leader may turn right or left, so the group has to stay alert to catch the change.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student can hold one diamond spot while seated and lead with arm, trunk, and head movements.
- Shy students: volunteers lead first, and anyone who needs it may repeat a move they've already seen instead of inventing one.
- High fitness: ask them to add a short there-and-back traveling move during their turn.
Learning goals
- Improvise simple rhythmic moves the group can imitate.
- Keep the group in sync through changes of direction.
- Build confidence moving and leading in front of peers.

Teacher tip
Demo with a volunteer group before starting. If a group gets stuck, jump in as leader for one turn to give them ideas.
