Design Today's Sport-Specific Cool-Down
In groups, students analyze which muscles and joints today's sport loaded the most and design a sport-specific cool-down, which they then lead for another group. They apply anatomy and planning knowledge to manage their own recovery.
How to play
- Open question: which muscles and joints worked hardest today; for example, in soccer, adductors, hamstrings and calves (1 min).
- Groups of five choose three areas and design one stretch for each plus a final breathing exercise, using the illustrated worksheet (4 min).
- Each group leads its cool-down for a neighboring group, which does it and notes one improvement (3 min).
- Switch roles (3 min).
- The teacher picks the most complete cool-down to repeat the next time the class plays that sport (1 min).
Rules
- Hold each stretch for 20 to 30 seconds without bouncing.
- At least one exercise must be doable standing in case the ground is wet.
- While one group leads, the other listens without interrupting.
Variations
Easier
The worksheet includes a set list of stretches to choose from.
Standard
Open design of three stretches and a breathing exercise led for another group.
Harder
Each group justifies every choice with the sport action that loaded that muscle.
Adaptations
- Hearing impairment: the leading group uses the illustrated worksheet and demonstrates each pose.
- Limited mobility: the group includes a seated version of every stretch.
- Autism: give the student a specific role in the group, such as timekeeper or worksheet manager.
Learning goals
- Connect a sport's actions with the muscles it loads most.
- Design a fitting, sport-specific cool-down.
- Lead a group of classmates clearly and safely.
Equipment for a class of 25
- worksheets: 6
- yoga mats: 30
Teacher tip
Save the best cool-downs and build a bank organized by sport. By the end of the year, students will have their own resource.

A sensory grounding technique: students name five things they see, four they feel, three they hear, two they smell and one they taste while doing gentle stretches.
