Design-a-Line Parkour Team Challenge
In teams, students design a parkour line, a route with at least five movements they have learned, check its safety, and test it before swapping with another team. Students work on creativity, planning a movement project, and reducing risk.
How to play
- Make 5 teams of 5, each with an area, one bench, two mats, four cones, and two hoops. Explain the task: a line with five movements, such as a precision jump, a vault, a balance, a roll, and an underbar (3 min).
- Design: the team places the equipment, marks the route with cones, and decides the order of movements (6 min).
- Safety check: the team makes sure nothing moves, there is landing space, and nothing is higher than the hips; the teacher signs off (2 min).
- Test: each member runs the line three times, first walking and then with flow (6 min).
- Swap: teams rotate to try another team's line and leave one comment on the smoothest and the hardest part (8 min).
Rules
- No obstacle can be higher than hip height.
- No line is used until the teacher has checked its safety.
- Every line must have an easier version.
- Wait for the previous person to finish before starting.
Variations
Easier
The line has three movements and is walked through.
Standard
Five movements, a test run, and team rotation.
Harder
Design an out-and-back line with seven movements and no pauses.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student leads the design and safety check, and the line includes an adapted version for them.
- Shyness: the student can draw the course plan before the team builds it.
- Fitness level: each movement is offered at two levels so the whole team can complete the line.
Learning goals
- Design a movement course as a team using clear criteria.
- Identify and fix risks in the equipment setup.
- Link parkour movements together with flow.
Equipment for a class of 25
- gym benches: 5
- mats: 10
- cones: 20
- hoops: 10
Teacher tip
Give teams a firm time limit for setup or it drags on. Check each line before testing: it is the best moment to teach risk prevention.
