Descending Staircase Countdown Relaxation
A guided relaxation where students lie down and picture walking down a ten-step staircase while the teacher counts backward, letting go of one body area on every step. It builds deep relaxation and gives them a quick technique to fall asleep before a test.
How to play
- Students lie on their backs on their yoga mats, legs slightly apart and arms by their sides, palms up; dim the lights if you can (30 sec).
- Three slow breaths to begin; explain you will count from ten down to one and each number is one step lower, toward a quiet place (30 sec).
- From ten to six, about two breaths per number, they let go of one area on each step: feet, legs, hips, belly and chest; say something like 'nine, your legs are heavy and sinking into the mat' (2 min).
- From five to one, continue with back, shoulders, arms, neck and face, lowering your voice little by little (2 min).
- At one, give 1 minute of silence for them to enjoy the bottom of the staircase, breathing normally.
- 1-minute return: count up from one to five a bit faster; at five they wiggle their fingers, stretch, roll to one side and sit up slowly.
Rules
- Total silence from lying down until sitting up.
- No one jumps up: always roll to the side first.
- Everyone stays in their own space without touching classmates.
- Anyone uncomfortable with eyes closed can look at a spot on the ceiling.
Variations
Easier
Walk down only five steps, one large body area on each.
Standard
Walk down all ten steps, releasing one area on each.
Harder
Do the countdown silently at their own pace after hearing only the opening explanation.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility do it seated in a chair with the head supported or reclined if possible.
- For students with autism or anxiety, preview the whole sequence and let them sit with their back against the wall.
- For students who are still very wound up, start with one minute of arm and leg stretches before lying down.
Learning goals
- Reach a state of deep relaxation guided by voice.
- Release tension from each body area in order.
- Have a technique to relax before bed or before a test.
Equipment for a class of 25
- yoga mats: 25
Teacher tip
Your voice is the equipment: speak slowly, in a low tone, and get quieter as you go. Mention that they can use this in bed the night before a test by counting themselves down.
