Dance Film in One Gesture: Match-Cut Transitions
A match cut joins two shots through a gesture that starts in one place and finishes in another, as if the dancer jumped through space. Groups film a movement phrase that 'leaps' between spots around the school without breaking the gesture.
How to play
- Example and explanation: the gesture starts in one shot and finishes in the next with the same framing (3 min).
- Each group creates an eight-count phrase and splits it into four gestures with a clear start and finish (8 min).
- Filming: each gesture is shot in a different spot in the schoolyard marked with a cone, with the phone at the same height and distance (12 min).
- Quick edit in a phone app, joining the cuts at the gesture point (7 min).
- Screening and deleting discarded takes; school privacy rules apply (5 min).
Rules
- Only film group members who agree to it.
- Don't film other classes or in off-limits areas.
- The final video goes through the school's channel and isn't posted.
- The camera person never walks backward while filming without a classmate guiding them.
Variations
Easier
Two spots and one big gesture, like an arm circle.
Standard
Four spots and four linked gestures.
Harder
Six spots and a dancer swap in the middle of a gesture.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: stars with arm gestures or runs the edit; choose accessible spots.
- Camera-shy students: shoot detail shots (hands, feet) instead of full body.
- Deaf students: each take starts with a finger countdown.
Learning goals
- Design visual transitions from movement.
- Use the phone as a creative tool responsibly.
- Cooperate in defined roles: dancer, camera, editor.
Equipment for a class of 25
- phones: 6
- cones: 6
Teacher tip
Any free phone editor can trim and join clips. Common mistake: changing camera distance between shots, so a cone marks where the camera person stands.
