Curling Check-Out: Slide Your Answer into the House
A long lane split into five numbered zones is used to rate the lesson: each student slides a disc into the zone that matches their answer. It's a quick, anonymous, low-key check-out that leaves a visual snapshot of the group.
How to play
- Setup: tape off five consecutive zones numbered 1 to 5 beyond a delivery line; everyone uses discs of the same color so answers are anonymous (1 min).
- Question 1: "How calm did you feel on your most important throws?" Each student slides their disc to the chosen zone; if it stops short or goes long, they place it by hand where they meant (2 min).
- Question 2: "How much did you use data or tactics to make decisions today?" Clear the discs and repeat (2 min).
- Read the results: the group discusses what the two disc "clouds" show and what to change next session (2 min).
Rules
- Slide discs along the floor; never throw them through the air.
- Nobody comments on or points at anyone else's disc.
- Take turns from the same line, no rushing.
Variations
Easier
Three zones (a little, some, a lot) and just one question.
Standard
Five zones and two questions.
Harder
Three questions, and the teacher photographs each cloud to compare with the next session.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: push the disc with a stick from the chair or place it directly by hand.
- Visual impairment: zones have double-tape edges to feel with the foot, and a partner calls out each zone number.
- Low confidence: placing the disc by hand instead of sliding it is always allowed.
Learning goals
- Honestly reflect on your own experience in the lesson.
- Interpret a visual display of group data.
- End class with a calm, participatory task.
Equipment for a class of 25
- sliding discs: 30
- masking tape: 1
- question cards: 3
Teacher tip
No curling discs? Plastic plates, coasters or large jar lids work. Take a photo of the result: over two or three sessions you can see how the group's calm changes, which is useful data for your assessment.
