Cup-on-the-Back Mobility: Stretch Without Dropping It
A slow mobility cooldown with a plastic cup resting on the low back that stays put only if the torso moves with control. It turns stretching into a small precision challenge after strength work or HIIT.

How to play
- Set up: on hands and knees, a partner places the cup on your lower back and picks it up if it falls (1 min).
- Rock back toward your heels and return, very slowly, without the cup moving (2 min).
- Opposite arm and leg reach, 5 per side with a 3 s hold, keeping the cup in place (2 min).
- Standing, a gentle hinge until you feel the back of the thighs stretch, cup on the low back, 5 slow reps (2 min).
- Final challenge: each pair picks the hardest move and repeats it 3 times without dropping the cup (1 min).
Rules
- Cups stay empty in the gym; outside you can add a splash of water.
- If the cup falls, no big deal: put it back and slow down.
- Stretches should feel comfortable, never painful.
- Each pair collects its cups at the end.
Variations
Easier
No cup on the standing hinge and only two floor moves.
Standard
Four moves with the cup.
Harder
Two cups (low back and upper back) or a splash of water in the cup outdoors.
Adaptations
- Knee injury: kneel on a folded mat or switch to standing moves.
- Visual impairment: the partner calls out when the cup starts to slide.
- Wheelchair users: the cup sits on the thigh and the student leans the torso with control to move the back and hips.
Learning goals
- Mobilize the hips and spine with control after effort.
- Improve awareness of torso position.
- Lower arousal with a focus task.
Equipment for a class of 25
- plastic cups: 30
- mats: 15
Teacher tip
Use reusable cups and keep them in a box for future classes. The classic mistake is speeding up to win: the winner is whoever moves slowest, not who finishes first.
