Crossminton Box Rally
A net-free racket game in which each player defends a cone square and the opponent stands in another square several yards away, using a heavier shuttle that holds up in the wind. Students practice forehands and backhands over distance, accuracy and footwork inside their own box.
How to play
- Use cones to mark pairs of 18 x 18 ft squares 40 ft apart. One pair per court plus a third student who keeps score and rotates in (2 min).
- 3-minute cooperative rally: the goal is 20 hits in a row without the shuttle dropping, using forehands and backhands at shoulder height.
- Serve from the back line of your own box with an underhand stroke below the waist. Win the point if the shuttle lands in the opponent's box or if the opponent hits it outside yours.
- Games to 16 with the serve changing every three points; the scorekeeper replaces the loser when the game ends (10 min).
- Wrap-up: each player says whether they won more points deep or short in the opponent's box and why (3 min).
Rules
- Always hit from inside your own box; stepping out to hit gives the point to the opponent.
- Courts of different pairs are at least 10 ft apart so nobody runs into another court.
- Before hitting hard, check that nobody is crossing between the boxes.
Variations
Easier
Boxes 26 ft apart, and regular badminton shuttles on calm days.
Standard
18 ft boxes 40 ft apart with games to 16.
Harder
Doubles in 26 x 26 ft boxes, with partners required to alternate shots.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: shrink the student's box to 10 x 10 ft and the opponent aims at its front half.
- Visual impairment: use fluorescent shuttles and call out on each hit.
- Advanced players: serve with the non-dominant hand and alternate forehand and backhand.
Learning goals
- Hit forehands and backhands accurately over distance.
- Move within the box to hit with good balance.
- Learn an alternative racket sport that can be played outdoors.
Equipment for a class of 25
- rackets: 25
- special shuttlecocks: 13
- cones: 40
Teacher tip
The heavy shuttle flies fast and straight, so space the courts well. In a small blacktop area, set courts side by side with all players facing the same direction.
