Counterbalance Circle Cool-Down
In circles of 8 to 12 holding hands, students count off by ones and twos; on the signal, the ones lean in and the twos lean out, and the circle holds itself in balance. It's a calm trust and teamwork game that ends quietly.
How to play
- Form circles of 8 to 12 with an even number of students, standing with feet hip-width apart and hands firmly joined (1 minute).
- Count off alternating 1 and 2; the teacher explains that feet stay planted and bodies lean straight from the ankles.
- On "ones in," the ones slowly lean toward the center and the twos lean out; hold for 5 seconds and return to standing (2 minutes).
- Repeat with roles switched and try holding for 10 seconds while the group counts quietly (2 minutes).
- To finish, everyone lets go, closes their eyes, and takes three slow breaths, feeling their weight in their feet (1 minute).
Rules
- Feet stay planted and bodies stay straight, with no bending at the waist.
- Lean slowly and gradually; no one drops their weight suddenly.
- If anyone says "stop," the whole circle comes back to standing.
- Grip hands or wrists firmly, without interlocking fingers.
Variations
Easier
Practice first in pairs, holding hands and both leaning back.
Standard
Full circle alternating ones and twos with a 5- to 10-second lean.
Harder
The circle tries to switch roles without returning to standing, flowing smoothly from one side to the other.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student joins from their wheelchair with brakes locked, leaning only the upper body inward, and gives the group the signal.
- Autism or touch sensitivity: the student can be the observer and counter, or hold a scarf to link with classmates.
- Differences in size or weight: alternate students of similar build and reduce the lean.
Learning goals
- Coordinate group effort to hold a shared balance.
- Build trust in classmates.
- Communicate clearly when to stop for safety.
Teacher tip
Always do the partner version first and practice the word "stop." Use a non-slip floor and stay away from walls or benches.
