Countdown Combo: 8-4-2-1 Step Pyramid
A warm-up routine using four basic steps, first repeated eight times each, then four, two and one, until they become a fast linked combo. It builds rhythm, movement memory and a gradual rise in intensity, the way many aerobics instructors layer a routine.
How to play
- Set students up in staggered rows facing the front. Play a song with a clear beat around 125 beats per minute.
- Teach the 4 steps: alternating knee lifts, grapevine, jumping jacks and side lunges. Practice each one for 30 seconds (2 minutes).
- Pyramid: 8 reps of each step in a row, then 4 of each, then 2, and finally 1 of each, repeating that short combo several times.
- Repeat the full pyramid twice (about 3 minutes) without stopping the music, counting the changes out loud.
- In groups of 4, take 2 minutes to swap one step for an invented move and practice your own pyramid.
- Final minute: all groups perform their pyramid at the same time, then walk slowly around the space.
Rules
- Complete every step fully, even if you need to slow down.
- Keep your spot in the row without crowding a classmate.
- Safety: land jumps softly with bent knees.
- If you get lost, wait for the next set of 8 and jump back in.
Variations
Easier
Do only the 8- and 4-rep levels with no-jump steps.
Standard
Full pyramid of 8, 4, 2 and 1 reps with four steps.
Harder
Add a fifth step with a turn and run the pyramid back up: 1, 2, 4 and 8.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility do an arm version of each step, seated or standing with support.
- For students with autism or shy students, post a card showing the four steps and the number of reps.
- Less-fit students replace jumping jacks with step-out jacks.
Learning goals
- Memorize and link a four-step sequence.
- Stay on the beat while the number of reps changes.
- Raise warm-up intensity gradually.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
Count the changes out loud yourself the first few times, then hand it off to a student. The one-rep level is the most fun: encourage students to stay on the beat.
