Count Your Own Eights: Cue-Free Switches
Groups link four warm-up exercises, switching every four eight-count phrases with no one giving a signal: students must count the music themselves. It builds musicality, focus and a coordinated warm-up.
How to play
- Explain how to count music in 8-count phrases and practice for 1 minute by marching and counting 1 to 8 out loud.
- Make groups of 5 in a circle. Sequence: jog in place, jumping jacks, step-touch with a clap and knee lifts. Each exercise lasts four 8-counts (32 counts).
- First round (2 minutes): the group counts out loud and switches exercises together. The teacher gives no signal.
- Second round: count silently. The teacher watches whether all groups switch at the same time and comments at the end.
- Third round: each exercise lasts only two 8-counts, counted silently, with a slightly faster song.
- Final minute: groups suggest the order of the exercises and everyone does it together.
Rules
- No one counts for the group during the silent rounds.
- If the group gets off, wait for the next count of 1 and restart the exercise.
- Safety: land jumps softly in an area clear of obstacles.
- Keep the circle so everyone in the group can see each other.
Variations
Easier
Each exercise lasts eight 8-counts, always counted out loud.
Standard
Four exercises of four 8-counts each, first counted aloud and then silently.
Harder
Each exercise lasts a different number of 8-counts, such as 4, 2, 3 and 1, counted silently.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility do seated versions of the exercises and keep count on their fingers for the group.
- For students with hearing loss, a partner marks each 8-count with a raised hand or shoulder taps.
- Less-fit students replace jumping jacks with step-out jacks.
Learning goals
- Count 8-count musical phrases independently.
- Stay focused while exercising.
- Coordinate exercise changes with the rest of the group.

Teacher tip
Pick songs with very clear phrasing and no long intros, or start the count yourself on the first beat. This warm-up is great prep for dance units.
