Cool-Down Station Rotation
Groups rotate through four short stations: stretching, self-massage with a ball, breathing and written reflection. Each station has an instruction card, so students run their own recovery with growing independence.
How to play
- Set up four stations in the corners of the gym, each with a card: 1) leg stretches, 2) tennis ball self-massage on the sole and calf, 3) 4-6 breathing lying down, 4) three reflection questions.
- Make four groups of six or seven and give each a starting station (1 min).
- Each group reads the card and does the task for 2 minutes while you keep time with the stopwatch (2 min).
- Soft signal to switch: the group tidies the station and walks slowly to the next one, clockwise.
- Complete all four stations the same way (6 min).
- At the end, groups put away the equipment at their last station and each student names the most useful one (1 min).
Rules
- Read the card before starting and follow it as written.
- Switch stations walking and in silence.
- Keep self-massage pressure gentle; if it hurts, ease off.
- Leave each station the way you found it.
Variations
Easier
Three stations of 3 minutes each with picture cards.
Standard
Four 2-minute stations with written instructions.
Harder
Each group designs a fifth station and explains it to the class next lesson.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: each card includes a chair or wheelchair version of the task.
- Students with autism: give them a map of the station order and a one-minute warning before each switch.
- Slow readers: a teammate reads the card aloud to the group.
Learning goals
- Use different recovery strategies after exercise.
- Run the cool-down independently by following instructions.
- Reflect on their own participation in the lesson.
Equipment for a class of 25
- yoga mats: 7
- tennis balls: 7
- station cards: 4
- stopwatch: 1
Teacher tip
Laminate the cards so you can reuse them. Stay near the self-massage station, which usually needs the most coaching.
