Color Reaction Game
Color reaction game: the whole class jogs and, when the teacher calls a pinnie color, only the students wearing it do the action called. Students work on reaction speed, selective attention and a general warm-up.
How to play
- Hand out pinnies in four colors evenly (about 6 per color).
- Everyone jogs freely around a marked area of about 20×20 meters (about 65×65 ft).
- The teacher calls a color and an action: "Reds, down to the floor and up!", "Blues, sprint to the line!", "Greens, five jumps!".
- Everyone else keeps jogging and dodging; students who did the action go back to jogging.
- Make a call every 10–15 seconds for 6 minutes, starting with easy actions and gradually raising the challenge.
- Finish with 1 minute of easy jogging and deep breaths.
Rules
- Only the color called reacts; everyone else keeps jogging.
- Do the actions without bumping into anyone, looking around as you move.
- When going down to the floor, put your hands down first and find open space.
- Anyone who reacts to the wrong color does a funny penalty jump and keeps going.
Variations
Easier
Two colors and simple actions, such as touching the floor or clapping.
Standard
Four colors with actions of increasing intensity.
Harder
Combinations like "reds and greens switch sides", or reverse calls (students do the opposite).
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student has adapted actions for their color (turn around, raise the arms, move to a nearby spot).
- Color blindness or hearing loss: pinnies with a number as well as a color, and the teacher holds up a pinnie of the color while calling it.
- Low fitness: students may walk briskly instead of jogging between calls.
Learning goals
- Improve reaction speed to verbal cues.
- Stay focused throughout the warm-up.
- Raise intensity gradually.
Equipment for a class of 25
- colored pinnies: 25
Teacher tip
Call each color about the same number of times so nobody is left idle. Before any sprint action, make sure the target line is clear.

More warm-ups for Middle School
4v1 Warm-up Rondo
4v1 rondo in an 8×8-meter square: four players keep possession with passes along the ground while one player in the middle tries to win the ball. Students work on passing, directional first touch and quick decision-making.
5v2 Technical Warm-up Rondo
A 5v2 rondo (keep-away) to warm up with the ball: five players around the outside of a square keep possession while two in the middle try to win it. It builds passing, first touch and positioning, with gradual activation.
Activation Ball Relays
Team relays in which each runner completes a 12-meter course dribbling with the hand, dribbling with the feet or passing, depending on the round. It warms students up with sport-specific ball skills and encourages healthy team competition.
Activation with Agility Ladder
Agility ladder warm-up using four footwork patterns of increasing difficulty. Students work on coordination, foot speed and lower-body activation, always putting accuracy ahead of speed.
Active Chain Stretching
Linked active stretches from feet to head, holding each position for about 5 seconds and flowing smoothly into the next. It prepares the muscles and teaches a warm-up routine students can do on their own.
Active Corners
Each corner of the space is marked with a cone and an exercise; the teacher calls a corner and students run to it to complete the exercise. It's a fun warm-up that raises the heart rate and works reaction time and body control.
