Coach's Mailbox: One Tip for Your Partner's Next Workout
During a walking cool-down with easy mobility, each student writes their training partner one concrete tip for their next workout based on what they saw. Cards go in a mailbox and are handed out at the start of the next class.
How to play
- Pair walk with shoulder and hip mobility while each partner says how the session felt (3 min).
- Format reminder: "I noticed that…, next time try…". Just one tip, always about technique, load or rest (1 min).
- Write the card standing up, with calf and quad stretches between sentences (4 min).
- Drop it in the mailbox and finish with one word that sums up the session (2 min).
Rules
- The tip is specific, kind and doable in one session.
- No comments on a partner's body, weight or clothes.
- Only the recipient and the teacher read the card.
Variations
Easier
Cards with sentence starters ("Try lowering/raising…").
Standard
Free tip using the observation-plus-suggestion format.
Harder
The tip includes an observed number (reps, RPE, rest time) and how to tell if it worked.
Adaptations
- Writing difficulties: dictate the tip to the teacher or record a short voice note.
- Visual impairment: write in large print or read the card quietly to the recipient.
- Students without a regular partner that day: write a tip for themselves.
Learning goals
- Recover actively and calmly.
- Give useful, respectful feedback as a coach.
- Use observation to adjust a training plan.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cards: 30
- pencils: 30
- box: 1
Teacher tip
A shoebox with a slot makes a fine mailbox. Skim the cards before handing them out; the usual problem is vague lines like "try harder", which you send back to be made specific.
