Closing Circle: Stretches and Partner Dance Reflection
At the end of a partner dance session, the class forms a circle to stretch the muscle groups used most while reflecting on how they experienced the contact, the invitations and the role switches. It brings the heart rate down and helps catch any discomfort early.
How to play
- In a circle, standing calf, quad and hip stretches (3 min).
- Shoulder and forearm stretches, since these work hard in partner holds (2 min).
- Thumbs round (up, sideways or down) for three questions: I felt comfortable with the contact, I tried both roles and my no was respected (3 min).
- Anyone who wants to shares an idea to improve the next session, or tells the teacher privately afterward (2 min).
Rules
- Nobody has to speak: a thumb is enough.
- Situations involving specific people are not discussed in front of the group.
- Stretches are gentle, with no bouncing.
Variations
Easier
Only stretches and one question.
Standard
Stretches and three thumbs questions.
Harder
Each student suggests a new ground rule for social dancing.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: upper-body stretches from the wheelchair.
- Hearing impairment: the questions are written on the board.
- Autism: knows the questions from the start of the session and may answer in writing.
Learning goals
- Return to a calm state after activity.
- Reflect on respectful contact and role switching.
- Spot and prevent uncomfortable situations within the group.
Teacher tip
If a thumbs-down keeps coming up, talk privately with that student afterward. These answers help you adjust pairings and group dynamics.
