Climb Everest Step-Up Challenge
A cooperative challenge in which the whole class adds up step-ups on a gym bench to "climb" the 8,848 m (29,032 ft) of Mount Everest over several lessons. It builds endurance and leg strength, goal setting with numbers and pulse checking.
How to play
- Tape butcher paper to the wall with the mountain and its camps: Base Camp (5,364 m), Camp 1 (6,065 m), 2 (6,400 m), 3 (7,162 m), 4 (7,950 m) and the summit. Each full step-up counts as 1 meter.
- Set 5 benches firmly against the wall and make 5 groups of 5. Teach the technique: one foot up, the other foot up, one foot down, the other foot down, switching the lead leg (3 min).
- At each bench, 3 students step up at the same time while 2 count their classmates' step-ups out loud.
- Rounds are 90 seconds of stepping and 30 seconds to switch roles. Run 8 rounds so each student steps about 5 times (16 min).
- After each round, the group records its meters and one student adds up the class total.
- Before the last round, everyone takes a 15-second pulse count and compares it with their resting pulse.
- At the end, mark how high the class has climbed and how far is left.
Rules
- Place your whole foot on the bench and step down; never jump off.
- Everyone works at their own pace; groups do not compete, they add up for the class.
- Counters count out loud and honestly.
- If a bench moves, stop and tell the teacher.
Variations
Easier
Use a lower step or a folded mat, and each step-up counts as 2 meters.
Standard
Gym bench, 90-second rounds and a Base Camp goal for the first lesson.
Harder
Step up holding a bean bag in each hand, or add a knee drive at the top of each step-up.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student earns meters with overhead ball presses.
- Shyness: the student can start as the official counter and recorder and join the stepping when ready.
- Different fitness levels: each student picks the step height and pace; every meter counts the same.
Learning goals
- Sustain moderate effort over several consecutive rounds.
- Set and follow a measurable class goal.
- Perform step-ups with safe technique.
Equipment for a class of 25
- benches: 5
- butcher paper: 1
- markers: 5
- stopwatch: 1
Teacher tip
Check that benches are stable before starting and remind students to look ahead when stepping down. Saving the poster and continuing it in later lessons is a big motivator.
