Classroom Fine Motor Stations
A circuit of five calm stations to build hand skills: cup pyramids, hanging clothespins, carrying with a spoon, copying shapes with craft sticks and tying bows. Perfect for rainy days, with the whole class active and no running.
How to play
- Set up 5 stations at desks or corners and make 5 groups of 5; demo each station quickly (3 min).
- Station 1: build and take down a 10-cup pyramid. Station 2: hang 10 clothespins on a rope tied between two chairs using thumb and index finger.
- Station 3: carry a ping-pong ball on a spoon along a 10-ft line walking heel to toe. Station 4: copy the shape on a card using craft sticks.
- Station 5: tie a knot and a bow with a rope around a chair leg.
- Groups spend 4 min at each station and rotate clockwise on the whistle (20 min). Students who finish early repeat with the other hand.
- Wrap-up (2 min): each student says which station they improved at most.
Rules
- Work on your own at each station while sharing the equipment.
- Reset the station the way you found it before rotating.
- Safety: walk slowly at station 3 without crossing anyone's path.
- Ask a classmate for help before giving up.
Variations
Easier
6-cup towers, 5 clothespins and 5-stick shapes.
Standard
Full challenges at each station with the dominant hand.
Harder
Every challenge with the non-dominant hand and against a sand timer.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: all stations are set at desk height for the student's chair.
- Students with autism: a picture card shows the station order and how long until the next rotation.
- Skill level: each station offers a green (easier) and red (harder) version to choose from.
Learning goals
- Improve pincer grasp and hand-eye coordination.
- Control fine movements while balancing and walking slowly.
- Keep trying on a hard task and ask for help when needed.

Teacher tip
Post a picture card at each station so they run without you, freeing you to help at the bow-tying station, which is the hardest for six-year-olds.
