Clap Count Catch
In pairs, the thrower sends a high pass and calls a number; the receiver must clap that many times before catching the ball. It is a short activation that builds hand-eye coordination, reaction, and reading the ball's flight.
How to play
- Form pairs with one ball, facing each other 3 yards apart, spread out with at least 3 yards between pairs.
- Tune-up round (1 minute): high, arcing overhead passes caught with two hands.
- The thrower sends a high pass and calls a number from 1 to 3; the receiver claps that many times and catches before the ball touches the floor.
- Each partner throws 6 times, then they switch roles; the pair earns 1 point for every successful catch.
- Second round (2 minutes): the number is given as a simple math problem, like "two plus two," and claps can be in front and behind the back.
- Final round (90 seconds): the receiver claps and also touches the floor with one hand if the number is even.
Rules
- High passes are soft and two-handed, never aimed at a partner's face.
- If the number is impossible for the height of the pass, the catch still counts: that's on the thrower.
- Catch with the hands in front of the chest, never blocking the ball with your face.
- Pairs move only within their own space.
Variations
Easier
Call the number before the throw and allow one bounce.
Standard
Call the number on the throw, 1 to 3 claps, no bounce.
Harder
Up to 5 claps, alternating in front and behind the back.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play seated with lower passes and a maximum of 2 claps.
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: the thrower shows the number with fingers before throwing.
- Lower skill level: use a larger foam ball and always allow a bounce.
Learning goals
- Coordinate the hands with the ball's flight.
- Judge how much time is available to do an action before catching.
- Adjust the height of the throw so a partner can succeed.
Equipment for a class of 25
- balls: 13
Teacher tip
This is a great warm-up for a small space; if the ceiling is low, replace the high pass with a strong bounce pass. Encourage students to celebrate every catch to keep the mood fun.
