Circle Pose Chain: Everyone Adds One
In groups of six sitting in a circle, students take turns adding one calm yoga pose, and the group repeats the whole chain from the start before the next one is added. It builds memory, cooperation, and postural control at a slow pace.
How to play
- Groups of six in a circle, each student on a yoga mat facing in; the teacher reviews a few gentle options: mountain, tree, child's pose, cat, butterfly, seated twist (1 min).
- The first student calls a pose and everyone holds it for three breaths (0.5 min).
- The second student repeats the first pose, adds their own, and the group does both in a row, three breaths each (1 min).
- Continue around the circle until all six have added a pose; if the group forgets, the pose's author reminds them by doing it, without talking (3 min).
- Final full chain: the group flows through all six poses in silence with slow transitions (1.5 min).
- Finish seated in the circle as each group quietly shares which pose felt most relaxing (1 min).
Rules
- Only calm, safe poses: no jumping, inversions, or arm balances.
- No repeating a pose that's already in the chain.
- Wait for the group: nobody moves to the next pose early.
- Talk only to name your own pose.
Variations
Easier
Chains of four poses, with a list of allowed poses posted on the whiteboard.
Standard
A six-pose chain, one per student, three breaths each.
Harder
Do the final chain with eyes closed, guided only by each author saying the pose name.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student calls and leads seated poses that the whole group does the same way.
- Autism or shyness: let the student pick from a picture list and skip saying the name out loud.
- Low flexibility: each student adjusts the depth of the pose while the chain stays the same.
Learning goals
- Remember and link a sequence of poses.
- Cooperate so the group finishes the chain without getting lost.
- Maintain postural control during slow transitions.
Equipment for a class of 25
- yoga mats: 25
Teacher tip
Keep the allowed-pose list visible so nobody throws in a risky pose for laughs; if a group gets stuck, suggest the author demonstrate it again.
