Ciranda: The Slow Beach Circle from Pernambuco
Ciranda is a circle dance from the coast of Pernambuco, Brazil, closely linked to the island of Itamaracá, where everyone holds hands and moves slowly, marking the bass drum beat. Its calm, open-to-all rhythm makes it perfect for bringing heart rates down as a group.
How to play
- Circle holding hands: gentle sway forward and back to slow music (2 min).
- Ciranda step: left foot forward with a slight dip on the strong beat, back again, and the circle turns slowly (2 min).
- Slower and slower: the circle opens and closes, breathing with the arms without letting go (2 min).
- Last round in silence, marking the beat with the foot, until everyone stops together (2 min).
Rules
- Nobody is left out: the circle opens for anyone who arrives.
- Hold hands without squeezing.
- The step is relaxed; if you speed up, ease off when you see your neighbors.
- Finish in silence and keep the circle until the signal.
Variations
Easier
Just swaying and slow walking in a circle.
Standard
Ciranda step with the dip and opening arms.
Harder
Two circles, one inside the other, turning in opposite directions in slow motion.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility: the circle matches their pace and they mark the beat with their arms.
- Students with visual impairments: hold on both sides and feel the beat through the sway of the hands.
- Students who avoid touch: hold a scarf between hands instead.
Learning goals
- Bring intensity down gradually as a group.
- Sync a slow step with the rest of the circle.
- Learn about a community dance from northeastern Brazil.

Teacher tip
Explain that in ciranda nobody dances better or worse: the circle grows with whoever shows up. If you don't have suitable music, mark the beat yourself with a slow clap.
