Chorus Flip Tag
A tag game set to current pop songs where the song structure is the boss: during the verses the students wearing pinnies are It, and when the chorus hits the roles flip and everyone chases the pinnie wearers. It builds a full-body warm-up, dodging skills and active listening.
How to play
- Listen together to the first minute of the song and have students raise a hand when the chorus starts, so everyone can recognize it.
- Free easy jog around the court for 1 minute while you hand out 5 pinnies, tucked into the waistband like a flag tail.
- Verse: the 5 pinnie wearers tag by touching backs or shoulders. A tagged student does 4 squats on the spot and jumps right back into the game.
- Chorus: roles flip. The whole class tries to pull the pinnie tails; whoever grabs one tucks it in and becomes a tagger for the next verse.
- Play 2 full songs (about 5 minutes), switching between verses and choruses without stopping the music.
- When the last song ends, do 1 minute of ankle and hip mobility while the class counts how many tails changed owners.
Rules
- Tag only on the back or shoulders; never push or grab clothing.
- The pinnie tail hangs outside the waistband and cannot be held with a hand.
- Play inside the court boundaries marked by lines or cones.
- Safety: always look ahead while running and slow down with short steps when the roles flip.
Variations
Easier
Use only 3 pinnies and a larger area so there are fewer collisions.
Standard
Use 5 pinnies on half a basketball court, flipping roles at every chorus.
Harder
Add the song's bridge as a third phase in which everyone may only hop on one foot.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility tag or guard a fixed hoop zone and may pull tails with a pool noodle.
- For students with autism or hearing loss, the teacher raises a colored cone when the chorus starts as a visual cue.
- Less-fit students may speed-walk during the verses and run only during the choruses.
Learning goals
- Raise heart rate gradually through a tag game.
- Recognize the verse-chorus structure of a song and react to its changes.
- Make quick chase-or-escape decisions based on the current role.
Equipment for a class of 25
- music (speaker): 1
- pinnies: 5
Teacher tip
Pick songs with a very clear chorus and similar lengths; the first few times, pause for 3 seconds right before the chorus. Make sure the same students don't always end up wearing pinnies.
