Chimes of Dunkirk
A traditional French-Belgian partner dance in a double circle: stamps, claps, a partner turn that imitates swinging bells, and a partner change every time through. It's short and very repetitive, perfect for mixing the class and working on rhythm.
How to play
- Double circle: the inner circle faces out and the outer faces in, each student with a partner in front (2 min).
- Part one: three stamps (right, left, right) and three claps; repeat (2 min).
- Part two: partners hold both hands and walk one full turn in eight counts, like a swinging bell (2 min).
- Progression: the outer circle steps right to a new partner while the inner circle waves hello (2 min).
- Dance the full routine until everyone has danced with at least eight partners (5 min).
- Switch roles so the inner circle moves on for two more repetitions (2 min).
Rules
- Walk during the partner turn; don't run or yank arms.
- Always change partners in the same direction and at the same time.
- Stamp in your own spot, away from your partner's feet.
Variations
Easier
Skip the partner change and dance with the same partner at a slow tempo.
Standard
Full dance with a partner change every time through.
Harder
Replace the walking turn with an eight-count elbow swing that changes direction halfway.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student using a wheelchair stays in the circle that doesn't move, and partners come to them; the turn is done holding hands while turning the chair.
- Shyness: place a helpful buddy nearby for the changes and start the student in the circle that stays still.
- Skill level: a student who mixes up right and left can do all three stamps with the same foot.
Learning goals
- Perform a traditional partner dance by following its structure.
- Coordinate stamps and claps with the beat of the music.
- Interact respectfully with many different classmates.
Equipment for a class of 25
- music: 1
Teacher tip
If the circles are uneven, join the one that is short a person. This is a great first-day dance, because everyone knows it within two minutes.
