Character Bus Ride
A drama game in which benches become a bus: each new passenger boards as a strong character or with a strong feeling, and every rider catches it and copies it until the next passenger gets on. It builds imitation, emotional expression and awareness of the group.
How to play
- Line up two benches as the bus with a driver in front (2 min). Everyone else waits at the "bus stop," which is also the audience.
- Four neutral passengers board. The driver pulls away in mime (steering, turns, sudden stops) and the passengers react with their bodies.
- A new passenger boards as a strong character (super sleepy, nervous, excited tourist, huge cold) and every rider copies it, exaggerating.
- After 30 seconds, the longest-riding passenger gets off and a new one boards from the audience with a new character.
- Play about 9 minutes so everyone rides at least once; switch drivers every 3 minutes.
- Wrap-up (2 min): Which character was easiest to copy, and which felt uncomfortable?
Rules
- Benches are seats: no standing or jumping on them.
- Characters never make fun of anyone's real traits.
- Board and exit on the same side, one at a time.
Variations
Easier
Whisper a character to each passenger, chosen from a simple list of feelings.
Standard
Each passenger chooses a character and everyone catches it for 30 seconds.
Harder
Each new passenger combines a character and a feeling (a scared pirate, an overjoyed grandma) and the audience guesses both.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student is the permanent driver or a passenger who rolls up at the end of the row; the character is shown with face, arms and voice.
- Autism: offer picture cards of characters to choose from and let the student watch two or three changes before boarding.
- Shy students: they can board with a calm character (sleeping, reading) that does not need exaggerating.
Learning goals
- Express a character or feeling clearly enough for others to copy.
- Quickly imitate classmates' gestures and attitudes.
- Show respect by choosing characters that do not offend.
Equipment for a class of 25
- benches: 2
Teacher tip
Before starting, agree as a class that nobody imitates physical traits or disabilities. If things get too wild, board yourself as a passenger who falls asleep and watch the energy drop.
