Chalk Footholds: Precise Feet on the Ground
A warm-up where students step with the toe of the shoe onto small marks, as if they were footholds. It trains looking at your feet and precise placement before getting on the wall bars.

How to play
- Easy jog among flat markers spread around the floor (2 min).
- On the whistle, step onto a marker with just the toe, quietly, and balance on one foot for 2 seconds (2 min).
- In pairs: one student draws eight coin-sized chalk "holds" in a zigzag; the other steps through them using only the toe (2 min).
- Same path with hands behind your back, looking at the foot before placing it (2 min).
- Challenge: there and back without stepping off any mark, then switch roles (2 min).
Rules
- Step with the toe, never the whole foot.
- Look at the mark before you step.
- During the jog, nobody cuts through another pair's path.
- Chalk stays on the floor; no drawing on shoes or clothes.
Variations
Easier
Bigger marks placed closer together.
Standard
Eight small marks a normal step apart.
Harder
Marks spread wider and off to the sides so feet have to cross.
Adaptations
- Students with low vision: use brightly colored flat markers instead of chalk, and the partner names each mark.
- Limited mobility: touch the marks with the wheelchair's front caster or with a stick from the chair.
- Students with poor balance: may rest a hand on their partner's shoulder.
Learning goals
- Place the feet precisely using the toe.
- Look at the foothold before placing the foot.
- Warm up ankles and legs before climbing.
Equipment for a class of 25
- chalk: 15
- flat markers: 30
Teacher tip
If the gym floor can't take chalk, use small pieces of masking tape. Common mistake: stepping fast without looking; ask them to "set" the foot down, not drop it.
