Catch the Stick Before It Drops
A reaction warm-up where each student lets go of an upright stick and rushes to catch someone else's before it hits the ground. It wakes up the legs and focus with a team challenge.

How to play
- Shoulder and trunk mobility holding the stick with both hands: circles, twists and overhead lifts (2 min).
- Partners one meter apart, each with a stick standing upright and one hand on top. On the signal, let go and catch your partner's (2 min).
- Extend the distance to 1.5 and then 2 meters; the pair decides when to step up (2 min).
- Groups of six in a circle. On the leader's call, everyone lets go and moves to the stick on their right; the goal is no drops three times in a row (3 min).
- Share records and put away the sticks with ankle mobility on the way to storage (1 min).
Rules
- Hold the stick at the top with an open palm; never lean on it.
- If a stick falls, let it fall; no diving for it.
- Keep circles at least four meters apart.
Variations
Easier
Half a meter apart and shorter sticks if available.
Standard
Pairs and circles of six at one to two meters.
Harder
Bigger circles, or moving two places instead of one.
Adaptations
- Students with visual impairments: work in pairs very close together with a clear verbal cue ('go').
- Students with limited mobility: do it seated, catching a stick released by a partner within reach.
- Hesitant students: always start at the short distance and decide when to move back.
Learning goals
- Improve reaction speed.
- Warm up the legs and shoulders before the main activity.
- Work with the group to meet a shared challenge.
Equipment for a class of 25
- pe sticks: 30
Teacher tip
If you don't have enough PE sticks, broom handles work. Students often watch their own stick as they let go: tell them to look at their partner's right away.
