Cardboard Disc on the Move: Passing While Jogging
In pairs, students pass a class-made cardboard disc while jogging across the schoolyard. It warms up shoulders and legs and sharpens the backhand throw.

How to play
- Jog side by side in pairs, 3 m apart, with shoulder circles (2 min).
- Short backhand passes while walking; the disc flies flat at chest height (2 min).
- Passes while jogging: lead your partner so they don't have to slow down (2 min).
- After each pass, the receiver switches sides by running behind their partner (2 min).
- Challenge: count passes in a row with no drops on an out-and-back course (2 min).
Rules
- Pass only to your partner, at a distance you can control.
- If the disc drops, pick it up and continue without running into other pairs.
- All pairs travel in the same direction.
- Catch with two hands in a pancake catch.
Variations
Easier
Walking passes at 2 m.
Standard
Jogging at 3-4 m, backhand.
Harder
Alternate backhand and forehand and spread to 6 m.
Adaptations
- Low vision: disc with a bright tape rim and a partner who calls 'now' on the throw.
- Limited mobility: passes from a fixed spot while the partner moves around them.
- Hesitant students: chosen partner and rolled passes along the ground at first.
Learning goals
- Warm up shoulders and wrists for throwing.
- Throw accurately to a moving partner.
- Coordinate running with catching.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cardboard discs: 15
Teacher tip
Make the discs by taping two paper plates together at the rim with packing tape and wrapping the edge; a thick cardboard ring also works. Common mistake: throwing with a tilted disc; ask for a firm wrist and a flat release.
