Cardboard Box Cars Safety Town
Students wear cardboard box cars hung from their shoulders and drive through a chalk town drawn on the blacktop, with signs, crosswalks, and pedestrians. It builds controlled movement, attention, and basic traffic safety rules.
How to play
- Build it (in an earlier lesson or art class): a box with the top and bottom cut off, two rope shoulder straps, and painted headlights. In class, take 3 minutes to put them on.
- Setup (before class): chalk streets 6 feet wide, an intersection, a traffic circle, and crosswalks; cardstock signs (stop, yield, do not enter) taped to cones.
- Roles (2 min): 12 drivers with cars, 9 pedestrians, 2 human traffic lights with red and green cards, and 2 officers in pinnies.
- Drive (5 min per round): cars jog on the right and stop at stop signs; pedestrians cross only at crosswalks when the light is green.
- Anyone who breaks a rule goes to the "repair shop," does 5 squats while the officer explains the mistake, and drives back in.
- Three rounds switching roles (15 min), then wrap-up (5 min): each group shares one rule they learned and how they'll use it on the way to school.
Rules
- Always drive on the right at a jog, with no passing in intersections.
- Cars yield to pedestrians at crosswalks.
- Always follow traffic lights and officers.
- Safety: the car is worn at the waist, never blocking your view.
Variations
Easier
Straight streets, one crosswalk, and one light, with no pedestrians at first.
Standard
A town with an intersection, a traffic circle, signs, and rotating roles.
Harder
Add pretend bikes that use arm signals to turn and a bike lane of their own.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: drives the wheelchair decorated as a vehicle or plays a traffic light.
- Hearing impairment: lights and officers use only visual signals and big gestures.
- Autism: a drawn map of the town and the same role for the first two rounds.
Learning goals
- Move with control, respecting space and pathways.
- Learn and apply basic traffic rules as a pedestrian and as a driver.
- Make game equipment from reused cardboard.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cardboard boxes: 14
- ropes: 28
- chalk: 10
- cardstock: 10
- cones: 10
- pinnies: 2
Teacher tip
Matching boxes make cars easier to build, so ask grocery stores. Leave the town drawn for recess: students keep playing on their own.
