Canarian Wrestling and Sportsmanship: Greeting, Grip and Helping Up
An adapted Canarian wrestling (lucha canaria) session focused on its respect rituals: the greeting before gripping and the tradition of the winner helping the fallen opponent up. Students wrestle with controlled off-balancing and observers rate sportsmanship.
How to play
- Context: in Canarian wrestling you lose a fall when you touch the ground with any body part other than the soles of your feet, and the winner traditionally helps the opponent up (4 min).
- Ritual in pairs: handshake, gripping stance with the left hand on the partner's rolled pant leg or waistband and the right on the back; hold it 20 s without wrestling (4 min).
- Off-balance bouts in threes: two wrestle from the grip on their knees on the mat trying to make the other put a hand down; the third observes and notes greeting, control and helping up (15 min).
- Rotate roles until everyone has observed twice (4 min).
- Debrief: each observer reads out one act of sportsmanship they saw (3 min).
Rules
- Wrestle on your knees on the mat; no lifting or throwing.
- No grabbing the neck, head or joints.
- If someone says 'stop' or taps twice, let go immediately.
- Greet before and after each bout, and the winner offers a hand to the one who fell.
Variations
Easier
Only pushing from the grip without trying to force a hand down.
Standard
Kneeling bouts trying to make the opponent put a hand down.
Harder
Best of three falls, switching partners after each bout.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student wrestles seated face to face with a hand grip, trying to off-balance the trunk, or acts as judge.
- Shoulder injury: takes part as observer and judge for the whole session.
- Uneasy with contact: picks a partner and starts with only the gripping stance and gentle pushes.
Learning goals
- Keep balance and off-balance the opponent with control.
- Take on the respect rituals of Canarian wrestling.
- Observe and value fair play.
Equipment for a class of 25
- mats: 16
- observation sheets: 10
Teacher tip
Ask for sportswear with a sturdy waistband or use cloth belts for the grip. Pair students of similar size and experience and watch that nobody dives head-first when off-balancing.
