Call Your Own Fouls Pickup Basketball
Half-court 3-on-3 games with no referee: the fouled player makes the call and the other team accepts it or asks to replay the possession. Students practice honesty, settling disagreements quickly and truly knowing the rules.
How to play
- Review basic fouls and violations: shooting foul, pushing, traveling, double dribble and backcourt. There is no referee today (3 min).
- Make teams of 3 with two teams per basket. Play to 11 or 5 minutes, baskets worth 1 and 2.
- The fouled player calls "foul" and raises a hand; their team inbounds from the sideline. If the other team disagrees, they say "contest" and the possession is replayed from the top.
- Anyone can call a violation, including the player who committed it.
- After each game, winners move to another basket and losers stay (4 games of 4 min).
- Wrap-up: each basket shares how many contests they had and how they were settled (3 min).
Rules
- Only the fouled player makes the call; the defender may own up first.
- A contested call is never argued: replay the possession.
- A team with three contests in one game gets the teacher as referee next game.
- No hands on backs and no shoving on rebounds.
Variations
Easier
Only shooting fouls and pushes are called; everything else plays on.
Standard
Self-officiated 3-on-3 with basic fouls and violations.
Harder
Add a 12-second shot clock that the defense counts out loud.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play with defenders keeping their distance, and serve as neutral witness on contested calls.
- Deaf or hard of hearing: signal a foul with a raised hand and a tap on the wrist.
- Lower skill level: play 4-on-4 at that basket for more support and less running.
Learning goals
- Own up to personal fouls honestly.
- Settle game disagreements without conflict.
- Apply basic rules without a referee.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
At first students will call too much or nothing: pause after game one and discuss real examples. Praise out loud anyone who admits a foul.
