Breath-Paced Ball Pass Circle
In circles of six to eight, students pass a foam ball very slowly following a shared breathing rhythm: they receive it on the in-breath and hand it on as they breathe out. It builds slow breathing, shared attention and calm group coordination.
How to play
- Form four circles of six or seven students sitting on the floor shoulder to shoulder, with one foam ball per circle (30 sec).
- Practice the rhythm without the ball: everyone breathes in for a count of four and out for a count of six, following your voice, for three cycles (1 min).
- The ball starts moving: whoever has it holds it while breathing in and hands it to the person on the right while breathing out, using both hands and not letting go until the partner has it (2 min).
- Drop your voice: each circle keeps the rhythm on its own, following the breath of whoever holds the ball.
- Second round with everyone's eyes closed except the passer, who signals by touching the ball to the receiver's hands (1 min).
- 1-minute wrap-up: the ball stays in the middle and the circle takes three breaths together before standing up slowly.
Rules
- The ball is handed over, never thrown.
- Talk only when needed and in a whisper.
- If the ball drops, pick it up slowly and keep going without blaming anyone.
- No one speeds up: the slowest, calmest circle wins, not the fastest.
Variations
Easier
Pass the ball with eyes open while your voice sets the rhythm the whole time.
Standard
Keep the four-in, six-out rhythm unguided after the first minute.
Harder
Stretch the exhale to eight counts and send two balls around in opposite directions.
Adaptations
- For students with limited mobility, set the circle at wheelchair height with everyone seated on chairs or benches.
- For students with visual impairments, use a ball with bells and always touch the receiver's forearm before handing it over.
- For very active students who struggle to stay still, make them the rhythm leader of their circle for the first round.
Learning goals
- Breathe slowly and steadily as a group.
- Coordinate a simple movement with the breath.
- Work together to keep a shared rhythm without talking.

Teacher tip
If a circle is going too fast, sit down with them and breathe out loud for a couple of cycles. This works really well right after a ball game to bring the group's energy down.
