Bossaball-Inspired Footvolley: Feet, Head and One Hand
A trampoline-free net game inspired by bossaball, a sport created in Spain that blends volleyball, soccer and acrobatics on an inflatable court. Each team mixes foot and head touches with just one hand touch per player, so students must choose the right surface each time.
How to play
- Explain our version: 4 vs 4 on a volleyball court with the net lowered; up to five touches per side; each player may touch once with the hands or up to twice in a row with feet, thighs or head (4 min).
- Rally in groups of four with a soft ball and no net: a required foot, head, hand sequence to learn the combination (5 min).
- 4 vs 4 games to 11 points on two courts with music in the background, as at bossaball tournaments; winners move up a court (15 min).
- Final challenge: a point only counts if the attack is with the head or foot (4 min).
- Take down the net and discuss: which surface gives the most control, and which the most power? (2 min).
Rules
- One hand touch per player per rally.
- No one jumps for the ball near the net if another player is underneath.
- No scissor kicks or acrobatic spikes: there's no soft surface to land on.
- A ball that hits the floor on your side is a point for the other team.
Variations
Easier
One bounce allowed per side and a soft ball.
Standard
No bounce, five touches and a volleyball.
Harder
Each team may only use hands on the first touch of the rally.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users play the front zone with two hand touches allowed.
- Ankle injury: plays using only head, chest and hands, with two hand touches.
- Students unsure with their feet start with a soft ball and the no-net sequence.
Learning goals
- Choose contact surfaces wisely.
- Cooperate to build an attack over several touches.
- Learn about a modern alternative sport and adapt it safely.

Teacher tip
Original bossaball is played on an inflatable court with trampolines; here they're removed to avoid falls. Set the net a little lower than for volleyball, somewhere between badminton and women's volleyball height. Typical mistake: everyone uses their hand on the first touch, and then nobody has a hand left to save the ball.
