Blindfolded Guardian: Reach the Cone in Silence
A blindfolded guardian sits next to a cone while the rest of the group tries to sneak up and touch it without making a sound. If the guardian points at someone they hear, that person goes back to the start line, with no elimination. The silence and slow movement lower heart rate and demand body control and honesty.
How to play
- Form two groups of 13 to 15, each with a guardian sitting blindfolded beside a cone; the others stand in a semicircle 30 ft away (1 min).
- On the signal, everyone moves forward in slow motion; if the guardian hears a sound and points toward someone, that person returns to the line and starts over (3 min).
- Whoever touches the cone becomes the new guardian; play a second round (3 min).
- Quick discussion: what footwork or breathing let you get close without being heard (1 min).
Rules
- Move by walking slowly, with no running or crawling on the floor.
- If the guardian points at you, go back without arguing; the game runs on honesty.
- The blindfold comes off as soon as the round ends, and nobody touches the guardian, only the cone.
- No making noise on purpose to distract the guardian.
Variations
Easier
The semicircle starts at 20 ft and the guardian may point only three times per round.
Standard
Start at 30 ft, approach in silence and rotate the guardian.
Harder
Everyone wears a bell on the ankle and must move without it ringing.
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: may be guardian every round, since the role is based on listening, or approach guided by a partner's hand.
- Hearing impairment: does not act as guardian; approaches with the rest and gets a tap on the shoulder if pointed at.
- Wheelchair users: approach by pushing the chair slowly, a real control challenge, starting on a smooth floor.
Learning goals
- Lower heart rate through silence and slow movement.
- Control the body to move without making noise.
- Respect rules based on honesty.
Equipment for a class of 25
- blindfold: 2
- cones: 2
Teacher tip
Play on a floor that makes a little noise, like the gym court; on grass it is too easy. Pick a very active student as the first guardian, since the role helps them settle down.
