How to play
- Groups of 7 or 8 standing on a bench with mats on both sides. Ankle, knee, and shoulder mobility on the bench (2 min).
- Challenge 1: line up by birthday, January to December, without stepping down (3 min).
- Challenge 2: line up by the first letter of your first name without talking, gestures only (3 min).
- Challenge 3: reverse the whole order, first goes last, as fast as you can (2 min).
Rules
- If you touch the floor, step back up at your spot and the group adds 5 seconds; nobody is out.
- Hold shoulders, arms, or waist; never push.
- Pass slowly and sideways; no jumping off the bench.
- Bench always wide side up, with mats around it.
Variations
Easier
Put a mat on each side that counts as "safe floor" once per person.
Standard
Regular bench with all three challenges.
Harder
Two groups on the same bench, one from each end, must swap sides.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: join from the floor as the "coordinator" who checks the order and starts the clock.
- Fear of height: start on a floor line and move to the bench for the second challenge.
- Visual impairment: the neighbor guides their hand to the next hold before each step.
Learning goals
- Balance on a narrow base with help from others.
- Organize without talking using gesture codes.
- Learn simple facts about classmates.
Equipment for a class of 25
- gym benches: 4
- mats: 8
Teacher tip
Check that benches don't wobble and that mats have no gaps. The usual mistake is trying to pass face-forward: teach passing face to face, gripping forearms.
