Bench Beam Pass-By
Two students start at opposite ends of a gym bench, meet in the middle, and have to pass each other without stepping down. Students work on dynamic balance on a narrow surface, communication, and choosing the best technique to get past each other.
How to play
- Set up 6 gym benches spread apart with mats on both sides of each one, and make groups of 4: two pairs per bench taking turns (2 min).
- Bench warm-up: one at a time, each student walks the bench forward, backward, and sideways (3 min).
- First technique: both walk to the middle, grab each other's forearms, pivot together in a half circle, and continue to the opposite end (3 min).
- Second technique: one student squats down in the middle and the other steps over them with hands on their shoulders; then they switch roles (3 min).
- Pair challenge: each pair picks its favorite technique and scores one point for every complete pass-by with nobody touching the floor; they get 3 tries before giving the turn to the other pair (4 min).
Rules
- Only one pair on the bench at a time.
- If someone loses their balance, they step down onto the mat feet first and let go of the partner so they do not pull them off.
- Walk slowly; no running or jumping on the bench.
- Talk before passing to decide who moves first.
Variations
Easier
Pass on the wide side of the bench with a teammate on the floor offering a hand.
Standard
Pass on the wide side of the bench with no outside help.
Harder
Flip the bench over to use the narrow beam and pass each other with a beanbag balanced on the head.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: tape a double line on the floor so the pass-by happens with no height, using a crutch or wheelchair if needed.
- Shyness: let the student pick a trusted partner and start with the technique that needs the least contact.
- Fitness level: a student afraid of height can do the pass-by with a classmate holding their hand from the floor.
Learning goals
- Keep dynamic balance on a narrow, raised surface.
- Decide with a partner on the safest way to pass each other.
- Cooperate through physical contact and clear verbal communication.
Equipment for a class of 25
- gym benches: 6
- mats: 12
Teacher tip
Check that the benches do not wobble and that the mats fully cover the sides. The usual mistake is staring at the feet; ask students to look their partner in the eye while they pass.
