Beats per Minute: Jog to the Metronome
A metronome app played through a speaker sets the beat, and the class steps once on every click while the tempo slowly rises. It warms up the body and teaches students to feel the rhythm of their foot strikes.

How to play
- Brisk walk, stepping on every metronome click at a slow tempo (2 min).
- Easy jog with a slightly faster metronome, aiming for short, quiet steps (2 min).
- High knees and butt kicks on the beat over 15 m stretches between cones (2 min).
- Run the straight at the fastest tempo and walk back to recover (2 min).
- Each group suggests its comfortable tempo; try one per group and talk about which feels easiest (2 min).
Rules
- One step per click: if you lose the beat, walk and jump back in.
- All lines go the same direction and return on the outside.
- Keep the volume low enough to hear the teacher.
- Nobody races: you win by staying on the beat.
Variations
Easier
Slower tempos, walking and jogging only.
Standard
Four tempos that build gradually.
Harder
Surprise tempo changes every 20 seconds.
Adaptations
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: the teacher shows the beat with visible claps or a flashing light on the tablet.
- Students with visual impairments: run with a guide on a tether, following the sound.
- Students with a minor injury: keep the beat with arms or feet in place.
Learning goals
- Raise body temperature progressively.
- Match step rate to an external rhythm.
- Find a comfortable running cadence.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tablets: 1
- portable speakers: 1
- cones: 12
Teacher tip
Any free metronome app works. Common mistake: lengthening the stride to go faster instead of stepping more often; keep reminding them to take short steps.
