Beanbag Foot Toss to Hoops
Students balance a bean bag on top of the foot and toss it with the foot into hoops at different distances, using both legs and several techniques. It builds foot-eye coordination, single-leg balance, and accuracy with the feet.
How to play
- Each student gets a bean bag. First, they set it on top of the foot and flick it up to catch it with their hands, alternating right and left foot (3 minutes).
- Make 6 groups of 4 (one group of 5). Each group faces 3 hoops on the floor set 6, 10, and 13 feet (2, 3, and 4 m) from a cone line; they are worth 1, 2, and 3 points.
- Taking turns, each player rests the bean bag on top of the foot, swings the leg from the hip, and tosses it into the hoop of their choice. Then repeat with the other leg.
- Another way: squeeze the bean bag between both feet, do a small hop, and release it forward into the closest hoop.
- Each group adds up points for 3 rounds, then rotates to the next station, where the hoops are at different distances or sizes (6 minutes).
- Final partner challenge: one partner tosses the bean bag with the foot and the other tries to catch it in the air; count catches in 2 minutes.
Rules
- Collect bean bags only after the whole group has tossed.
- Your standing foot stays behind the cone line.
- Toss the same number of times with each leg.
- In the partner challenge, aim for your partner's hands, never the face.
Variations
Easier
Hoops at 3 and 6 feet, and push the bean bag along the floor with the foot instead of lifting it.
Standard
Three hoops at 6, 10, and 13 feet, tossing from the top of the foot with both legs.
Harder
Toss with the non-dominant leg only, or aim for a small hoop 13 feet away.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: students who can't toss with the foot throw with the non-dominant hand from a wheelchair or seated.
- Autism: color-code each distance with a hoop color and keep the same group for the whole activity.
- Skill level: each player picks a hoop they feel confident about and may hold a partner's shoulder for balance.
Learning goals
- Control an object with the foot and toss it accurately.
- Balance on one leg while the other leg tosses.
- Use both legs to toss and accept misses.
Equipment for a class of 25
- bean bags: 25
- hoops: 18
- cones: 12
Teacher tip
Remind students to slightly bend the standing knee and swing from the hip, not the knee. Praise students out loud for using their weaker leg, even when they miss.
