Beanbag Balance Helping Hands
Each student travels to music with a beanbag on their head; if it falls, they freeze until a classmate picks it up and puts it back without dropping their own. Students practice balancing objects, posture control and helping others.
How to play
- Each student takes a beanbag and finds a spot. They practice walking with it on their head, eyes forward and back straight (2 min).
- Start the music and call the locomotor skill: walking, sideways, tiptoeing, slowly backward or along the floor lines.
- If a beanbag falls, that student freezes like a statue. A classmate bends at the knees, picks it up without dropping their own and places it back; the rescued student says 'thank you.'
- Every 2 minutes, change where the beanbag rides: shoulder, back of the hand, elbow or on the back in a bear crawl.
- Finish (3 min): class challenge, count rescues out loud during one song and try to beat that number in the next.
Rules
- No holding your own beanbag with a hand.
- Helpers place the beanbag gently; never toss it.
- Walk, don't run, and look ahead to avoid collisions.
- If both beanbags fall, both students wait for a third helper.
Variations
Easier
Walk slowly with the beanbag on the shoulder, which is easier to keep.
Standard
Beanbag on the head with varied locomotor skills and classmate rescues.
Harder
Travel only along floor lines or step over ropes without losing the beanbag.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: carry the beanbag on a knee or wheelchair armrest and rescue with a grabber.
- Visual impairment: use a beanbag with a bell to hear when it drops, with a guide nearby.
- Fitness level: skilled students carry two beanbags, on the head and shoulder.
Learning goals
- Balance an object on the body while moving.
- Bend the knees with a straight back to pick something up.
- Help classmates and thank others for their help.
Equipment for a class of 25
- bean bags: 25
- music
Teacher tip
Start with calm music and switch to something upbeat once balance improves. Praise rescues out loud so the goal shifts from not dropping to helping.
