Basketball Chain: Ankle, Hip and Shoulder After the Game
A basketball-specific stretching chain for the areas most stressed by jumping, landing, cutting and shooting. It is done right on the court using poles, bleachers and walls, and students learn why each exercise is chosen.
How to play
- Walk one length of the court with very light imaginary dribbles, alternating heel and toe contact to loosen the ankles (1 min).
- Calf and soleus with hands on the wall or the basket pole: 25 s with knee straight and 25 s with knee bent, each leg (3 min).
- Hip flexor in a low lunge with the back knee on the free-throw line, and standing quad stretch holding a partner for balance, 25 s per side (3 min).
- Seated glute and piriformis stretch in a figure four, 25 s per side (1 min).
- Shooting shoulder: lat stretch holding the pole or wall at hip height and sitting the hips back; explain how it relates to shooting and rebounding (2 min).
Rules
- Stretches are static, no bouncing, at an intensity of 3-4 out of 10.
- Only one student per basket pole, and only with the pole padding in place.
- A partner used for balance stays still and steady without pushing.
- Anyone with a recent ankle sprain skips the loaded soleus stretch and does it seated with a band or towel.
Variations
Easier
Cut it to three stretches: calf, quad and lat.
Standard
Full five-block chain with an explanation of each area.
Harder
Each student adds a knee-to-wall ankle mobility drill and explains how it relates to landings.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair basketball: focus the chain on shoulders, wrists, chest and neck.
- Visual impairment: a partner guides the student's hands to the pole or wall and describes the position.
- Autism: provide the sequence with picture cards and always keep the same order.
Learning goals
- Connect stretches to the demands of basketball.
- Perform lower-body and shoulder stretches correctly.
- Build a recovery routine students can use after games outside school.
Teacher tip
Before each block, ask which game action loads that area; students learn more when they work it out themselves. You can post a laminated copy of the sequence by the basket.
