Basketball 2v2 Up-and-Down Ladder
Simultaneous 2-on-2 games at numbered baskets: after each 3-minute game, winning pairs move up one basket and losing pairs move down. Students practice playing with a partner, give-and-go and good sportsmanship against new opponents.
How to play
- Number 6 baskets 1 to 6 with cardstock signs and form 12 pairs with pinnies; any extra student rotates in on a pair.
- Each basket hosts a 2-on-2; after a basket or defensive rebound, take the ball back past the free-throw line before attacking.
- Games last 3 minutes and each basket is worth 1 point; in a tie, the next made free throw wins.
- On the whistle, winners move up toward basket 1 and losers move down toward 6; at either end they stay.
- Between games there are 30 seconds to change baskets and plan a play with your partner.
- Play 6 games, then each pair shares which play worked best.
Rules
- Each pair must pass at least once before shooting.
- A player who fouls raises a hand and the other team gets the ball.
- Change baskets along the sidelines, never through other games.
Variations
Easier
Play 4-minute games with no need to take the ball back after rebounds.
Standard
3-minute 2-on-2 games with a required pass, moving up or down each game.
Harder
Players move up or down individually and form a new pair at every basket.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: one lowered hoop with distance defense, offered as an option, not a penalty.
- Autism: explain the ladder with a visual diagram and give a heads-up before each change.
- Lower skill: their partner may only shoot after receiving a pass from them.
Learning goals
- Work with a partner using passes and cuts.
- Defend as a pair, helping a partner who gets beaten.
- Accept wins and losses with respect.
Equipment for a class of 25
- youth basketballs: 6
- basketball hoops: 6
- numbered cardstock signs: 6
- pinnies: 13
Teacher tip
Make starting pairs random; the ladder sorts skill levels on its own. Use a loud whistle and a visible timer so everyone switches at once.
