Barefoot Foot Activation: Short Foot and Towel Scrunches
Barefoot exercises on a yoga mat to activate the small muscles of the foot: short foot, towel scrunches, toe control, and single-leg balance. Students improve arch control and ankle stability to help prevent sprains.
How to play
- Barefoot on the mat, walk for 1 minute on the toes, on the heels, and on the edges of the feet.
- Short foot (1.5 minutes): seated, draw the ball of the big toe toward the heel to lift the arch without curling the toes; 8 reps of 5 seconds, then 5 more standing.
- Towel scrunches (1.5 minutes): with a towel spread out in front, pull it toward the heel using only the toes; once with each foot.
- Toe control (1 minute): lift only the big toe while the others stay down, then the reverse; 10 per foot.
- Balance (1.5 minutes): on one leg with an active arch, 30 seconds eyes open and 15 eyes closed per side.
- Shoes back on and 30 seconds of easy hops.
Rules
- Before going barefoot, check that the floor is clean; everyone uses their own towel.
- Safety: do eyes-closed balance next to a wall or a partner.
- Anyone who prefers not to go barefoot wears grip socks.
Variations
Easier
Every exercise seated and balance with one hand on the wall.
Standard
Short foot, towel scrunches, toe control, and balance with eyes open and closed.
Harder
Short-foot balance on a folded towel while passing a ball with a partner.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: seated short foot and towel work if there is foot movement; otherwise assisted ankle mobility.
- Students with autism or tactile sensitivity: allow socks and give a heads-up before each texture change.
- Higher fitness level: add 10 single-leg heel raises holding the arch.
Learning goals
- Activate the foot muscles before activity.
- Improve single-leg balance while controlling the arch.
- Learn simple exercises that help prevent sprains.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
Remind students one lesson ahead to bring a towel and spare socks. In the short foot they tend to claw the toes: cue long, relaxed toes.
