Banded Hinge: From Wall Tap to Romanian Deadlift
A three-step progression to learn the hip hinge and apply it to a banded Romanian deadlift. It trains the posterior chain while protecting the back.
How to play
- Wall tap: stand a hand's length from a wall, back to it, and push the glutes back to touch it without bending the knees more; then step a little farther away (4 min).
- Dowel hinge in pairs: one hinges with the dowel along the spine, the other checks the three contact points (4 min).
- Banded Romanian deadlift: stand on the band with both feet, hold the ends and stand up by driving the hips forward (6 min).
- Partner sets: 3 sets of 10 reps, switching lifter and observer (5 min).
- Each pair writes in the air with a finger the cue word that helped most and shares it (1 min).
Rules
- The back doesn't round; if it does, shorten the range.
- Stand on the band with your whole foot and check it before use.
- When finished, lower the band slowly, never let it snap.
- Knees bend slightly and stay that way.
Variations
Easier
Only the wall tap and dowel hinge.
Standard
Romanian deadlift with a medium band.
Harder
Single-leg Romanian deadlift with one hand on the wall.
Adaptations
- Students with low back discomfort: stay with the dowel hinge and a short range.
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: use three agreed visual signals for hips back, chest up and stand.
- Unsure students: always work next to the wall as a reference.
Learning goals
- Tell the hip hinge apart from the squat.
- Perform the Romanian deadlift with a neutral spine.
- Strengthen glutes and hamstrings safely.
Equipment for a class of 25
- resistance bands: 30
- dowels: 15
Teacher tip
Have bands in two resistances and let students choose. The classic mistake is turning the hinge into a squat: if the knees drift forward, send them back to the wall tap.
