Balloon Swap with Rackets
A whole-class cooperative challenge: everyone keeps a balloon up with a racket and, on the whistle, sends it high and hurries to rescue someone else's balloon before it hits the floor. Students practice high hits, anticipation, and helping each other.
How to play
- Cone off an area about 50 by 50 ft; each student grabs a balloon and a mini racket and finds open space (2 min).
- Everyone taps their balloon up continuously; on a whistle, each student sends their balloon high, leaves it, and finds a nearby balloon to keep tapping.
- The teacher counts out loud how many balloons hit the floor on each swap; the class tries to get a swap with zero drops.
- After 5 swaps, record the total drops for the round and let the class suggest a strategy to improve, like hitting higher or calling out when switching (5 min).
- Round two with a double whistle: students must switch to a balloon at least 10 ft away, so they have to travel farther (8 min).
Rules
- Safety: walk fast, do not run, and keep the racket low while moving.
- You may not go back to your own balloon on a swap.
- If two students go for the same balloon, the first one there keeps it and the other finds another.
Variations
Easier
Swap with a set partner only, trading balloons with the person next to you.
Standard
Free swap on the whistle with a class count of dropped balloons.
Harder
Use 3 fewer balloons than students; anyone without one raises a hand to ask for a balloon while others keep it up.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: stay in a fixed spot while classmates tap balloons over to them; they only tap upward.
- Hearing impairment: pair the whistle with a visual signal, such as raising a cone.
- Skill level: students who struggle use a bigger balloon or a large-head racket.
Learning goals
- Hit the balloon high to give a classmate time.
- Anticipate where a balloon is going and move toward a free one.
- Work with the whole class to reach a shared goal.
Equipment for a class of 25
- balloons: 30
- mini rackets: 25
- cones: 8
- whistle: 1
Teacher tip
Play this indoors or when there is no wind. The key skill is a high, straight-up hit right before the swap; if too many balloons drop, shrink the area.
