How to play
- Pairs with a balloon: one holds a side-lunge adductor stretch for 30 seconds while tapping the balloon with the free hand to their partner, who taps it back; switch legs and roles (2 min).
- Standing hamstring stretch with the front heel down: hold the stretch and tap the balloon gently by hand (2 min).
- Half-kneeling hip flexor stretch: the partner tosses the balloon high and the stretcher returns it without losing the position (2 min).
- Group finale: circles of six in a quad stretch, steadying on a neighbor's shoulder, pass the balloon around without a drop for 30 seconds (2 min).
Rules
- No stretch should hurt: gentle, steady tension.
- If saving the balloon means breaking the position, let it drop.
- No bouncing in the stretches.
- One meter of clear space around each pair.
Variations
Easier
You can hold the balloon for a few seconds between taps.
Standard
Continuous taps while holding the position.
Harder
Only the non-dominant hand may touch the balloon.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users stretch hips and trunk seated, with side bends and rotations, and keep the balloon going the same way.
- Knee injury: skips the half-kneeling position and stretches the hip flexor standing with support.
- Students with limited flexibility choose their own range; their only challenge is not dropping the balloon.
Learning goals
- Restore length to the muscles used in kicking.
- Hold a stable position with an added attention task.
- Learn stretches that help prevent hip discomfort.
Equipment for a class of 25
- balloons: 15
Teacher tip
Use the balloons left over from the warm-up. Typical mistake: bouncing deeper into the stretch to reach the balloon; remind them that the position comes first.
